REFLECTION
Experience
Typography has definitely been one of the most valuable modules I’ve taken this semester. At first, I found it a bit overwhelming, especially since we jumped straight into creating designs while still learning the software. I wasn’t familiar with tools like Illustrator and InDesign, and I had to quickly adjust to the fast pace of the course. The third task, which involved creating my own typeface, was especially challenging, but it ended up being the most rewarding. I enjoyed working on the assignments independently, as it gave me the freedom to experiment. Ms.Vitiyaa’s feedback was crucial—she always pointed out specific areas I could improve, which helped me grow as a designer.
Observations
Throughout the module, I’ve become more aware of typography in the world around me. I now notice type in almost everything, from advertisements to book covers, and I find myself analyzing it more than I ever did before. It’s interesting to see how different choices in fonts or spacing can change the entire feel of a design. I also enjoyed seeing how my classmates approached the same tasks in unique ways, which inspired me to think more creatively. Focusing purely on type without relying on illustrations or bright colors was challenging but pushed me to explore new techniques like playing with composition, scale, and spacing to create impact.
Findings
When I first started, I thought typography was mostly about being creative, but this module showed me how much technicality goes into it. Learning about principles like alignment, hierarchy, and grids really helped me improve my designs. I was surprised to see how small changes, like adjusting the size or position of a letter, could make a big difference in how a design feels. I also appreciated the historical perspective on typefaces that Mr. Vinod and Ms.Vitiyaa shared—it gave me a new appreciation for how typography has evolved over time. Overall, this module has deepened my love for typography, and I’m excited to keep exploring it beyond the classroom.
