Phase 1: Observation

(Def: observation is about looking, reflecting, and articulating what you notice.)

The Up movie poster is in a vertical format, featuring a bright blue sky as the background. The title "Up" is prominently displayed in bold, white letters near the top. A house, lifted by a cluster of colorful balloons, floats in the sky just below the title. The balloons come in a variety of colors, including red, yellow, blue, and green, making them visually striking. Beneath the house, Russell, a young scout wearing a uniform adorned with various badges, is holding onto a garden hose that dangles from the house. Further down, Carl Fredricksen, an elderly man in a brown suit and glasses, also grips the hose with one hand while reaching out with the other.

Phase 2: Analysis

(Def: It involves interpreting those observations to draw conclusions. Consider how visual elements create design principles and impact the viewer.)

The poster effectively utilizes emphasis by highlighting the two main characters along with the floating house. The vibrant, colorful balloons stand out against the expansive blue sky, naturally drawing attention upward before leading the eye downward toward Russell and Carl. This strong contrast helps establish a clear visual hierarchy. The diagonal arrangement of the elements enhances the sense of movement, guiding the viewer’s gaze smoothly from Carl at the bottom, to Russell in the middle, and finally to the house and balloons at the top. The composition maintains balance through thoughtful positioning—while the balloons and title dominate the upper portion, the characters below provide visual stability. The repetition of colors in the balloons creates a cohesive look, reinforcing harmony and unity.

Phase 3: Interpretation

(Def: combine your observations, analysis, and factual or historical context to uncover the design’s meaning and purpose.)

The Up poster effectively conveys the spirit of the movie—an emotional and adventurous journey. The floating house symbolizes Carl’s dream of fulfilling his late wife’s wishes, while the balloons represent adventure, freedom, and escape from the mundane. Russell’s position clinging onto the hose highlights his unexpected role in Carl’s journey, reflecting the film’s theme of companionship and personal growth. The upward movement throughout the composition also reinforcing the uplifting and hopeful nature of the story. The bright colors and dynamic arrangement suggest excitement, wonder, and heartfelt emotion which I personally think that it's the main theme of this movie.

3. Ideations on the Selected Design

IDEA 1: Adjusting the characters with better placement

I chose to exaggerate the proportions and bold the outlines. The diagonal positioning of characters and the house creates a more dynamic movement compared to the selected design. Repetition of rounded shapes, from balloons to character features, unifies the design. I was inspired by the movie 'My Neighbour Totoro' below of the arrangements and proportions.

IDEA 2: Implying more balance in composition

The composition employs asymmetrical balance, with the dense cluster of balloons converging towards a single point, drawing attention to the small basket. Perspective enhances the depth, making the balloons appear infinite. I also planned to use of warm and cool colors creates strong contrast, emphasizing the dreamlike atmosphere. The placement of the solitary figure in the foreground reinforces Gestalt’s principle of figure-ground, directing focus toward the vast sky.

IDEA 3: Enhance on the depth and tone

To enhance depth and perspective, I emphasized their forward motion against the vast sky. The contrast between warm and cool tones ensures clear visual hierarchy, making the characters stand out. The figure-ground relationship directs focus toward them, while the upward leading lines from the balloons reinforce the adventurous theme. The composition subtly bends elements, adding visual energy while maintaining clarity.

4. FEEDBACK

Mr. Shamsul suggested that Sketch 3 was the most interesting among the others.
